Kouba O’Reilly Consulting Group
Company:
Kouba-O’Reilly Consulting Group provides training services, background screening, drug testing and contractor company prequalification services for industries including chemical processing, petrochemicals, power generation, biotechnology, hospitals and manufacturing.
Challenge:
Large facilities such as chemical or power plants often have thousands of contractors who visit the site. While it’s critical to ensure that these contractors receive the proper safety orientation and training, it can often be costly, time-consuming, and difficult to schedule, deliver, manage and report.
Kouba-O’Reilly saw an opportunity to streamline this process by developing a single location for managing all aspects of contractor compliance. The company had developed an initial proof-of-concept, but realized that in order to move forward, a more robust, modular platform was needed.
Solution:
Kouba O’Reilly selected Pathfinder based on their User Driven Agile development process and our industry-leading Ruby on Rails expertise.
Together, Pathfinder and Kouba O’Reilly created Gatefeed, a compliance management tool that allows plant and contract supervisory personnel to more easily manage contractor workforce requirements by bringing them together in a single, easy-to-use web-based application.
Using Ruby on Rails as the framework, Pathfinder first developed an application that extended the reports module, allowing the creation of custom reports to suit the users’ needs. Existing predefined reports were also extended, giving easy access to the most viewed reports, many of which are needed for regulatory compliance.
Pathfinder next turned to incorporating the actual safety tests into the application, thereby giving the contractor workforce both web-based course registration and online tests. The plant and contractor supervisory personnel now have the one-stop convenience of registering multiple contractors for tests needed for their on-site location and paying for those tests online. The contractors have the convenience of taking the course at a time and place that best suits their schedule. The end result? Safety tests that are automated and tracked so companies can quickly determine that their contractors are in compliance with government regulations.
Keeping future needs in mind, the new application was modularized both to improve maintainability and allow for extensibility, thereby setting the stage for releasing additional features and functionality.
