Note that the dialog box might not look right if you follow this example. This is because the styling of the default application doesn't work right in a gadget environment. The sample application "HelloGadgets" distributed with gwt-gadgets includes a pared down stylesheet.

@jblanche - Flex is great, but if you've never used it before you'll definitely end up writing obtuse code.

Try the Mate Framework - it is very good and definitely mature enough for production now.

Keep in mind that Flex is much more powerful than HTML/JS for a front-end, but it is also much more difficult. Be patient with it, or hire a Flex developer.

Great refactoring story :)

I love refactoring my old code and seeing progress I made.

Only one thing I would change - I would rather not place this kind of modules in initializers. If one of the gems fails initializers won't be run and you will end up with en error.

Cheers

Seban -- I meant to mention HAML in the original post, but I guess I forgot. Basically, I think that as long as you factor it well, and your designers are willing to work with it it's fine, though I don't see it as a huge breakthrough.

Although I like the indent block thing -- I was a happy Python programmer for a long time -- it does break down on very long blocks, and poorly factored view code does have a lot of long blocks. Those people here who are primarily working with HTML had a pretty negative reaction to some sample HAML code that I was showing around.

Great post! I wish I would've read something like this a couple of years ago. I still have a fair amount of legacy code that needs to be refactored into the "fewer helpers, more partials" model.

For a long time, I felt like creating a partial (and thus adding another file to my app) made it more complex. But, it's certainly better than bloated helper code.

The Rails Textmate bundle is a lifesaver for this sort of refactoring. Highlight a chunk of view code, hit Ctrl-Shift-H, name your new partial and it does all the rest!

One solution I've used is to create a presenter for each one of the displayable models. Each presenter can follow the same inheritance structure as the model and can really help to clean up those nasty helper methods.
