For all of you complaining about compressors failing maybe you should focus on writing clean code first. The phrase “There are serious errors in these compressors” just sounds weak. I would suggest JSLint like Jeremy said, or even Opera’s error console.

Just had to use some pre-made JS code, a 615Kb file for my website. Creativyst Javascript Compressor Was the only one that worked for me, not a very good compression, but, there were no problems with the “;” errors. 278 kb now, If it just had a variable shrinker option…

There are serious errors in these compressors, many of them won’t let prorotype-1.4.0 pass without errors.

I use Memtronic’s on a regular basis, and it works great for me… however, I also use http://www.jslint.com to make sure that there are no errors in the code to begin with. Because these compressors often put everything on one line, it makes JavaScript statements that do not end with a semi-colon invalid. I used prototype about a six months ago with an earlier version of Memtronic’s compressor – it took me a week to get it right, but I was able to compress it.

just tried compressing prototype with my own compressor – it takes ten minutes just to replace “element” with “Z”. on the plus side, it doesn’t hang up your browser while it’s working.
